After completing a 20-week course of classes in the Parent Leadership Training Institute, 22 proud parents from throughout Merced County, accompanied by their family and friends, celebrated at a graduation ceremony in their honor on Thursday, Oct. 22.
The Parent Leadership Training Institute held classes every Tuesday for 20 weeks and included topics on parent leadership the first 10 weeks followed by 10 weeks on politics, policy and media. Facilitators used a structured curriculum that included guest speakers from the local community and elected officials. In addition, the curriculum helps parents become the leaders and advocates they would like to be for their children and their families.
Held at the Italo-American Lodge in Merced, the graduation ceremony led by organizers Ms. Rosa Barragan and Ms. Sol Rivas, included speeches by keynote speaker Mr. Ozzie de Luna of Merced County Office of Education, two parent speakers, a presentation of certificates of recognition to each graduate from representatives of local, state and federal elected officials, and a full-course dinner.
It was an evening filled with gratitude for the commitment and dedication that these parents demonstrated in order to become stronger advocates for their children and change agents within their respective communities.
